By the title of this article, you are probably anticipating that I am writing about an improvement in the economy or our business world. I could; however, I'm sure you get your fill of that from everything else you read.
Actually, the thought that crossed my mind as I began to write this article was that the long winter is now over and…it's baseball season! So for me…MY world is improving as I get to check the newspaper every day and look at the box scores from the previous day's games and the updated standings. It's a diversion from my day-to-day business thoughts…which is something I need to stay energized, and balanced.
You see, most things are a matter of perspective. I'm reminded of the prayer (a paraphrase), "Please grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Why waste our energy on things we can't control? Makes no sense. So the issue MUST be that, when we do expend energy in these uncontrollable areas that we are having trouble discerning "the difference". When this happens in my life (sometimes daily!) what it says to me is that I need to slow down, don't overreact, and really think through the situation. Peter Drucker, who was known as "the father of modern management", prior to his passing in 2005 said: "When we look back on the twentieth century, the thing that is going to have the greatest impact is not going to be technology, as we now assume. Rather, it will be the fact that we have an infinite array of options."
So we need to choose wisely...and in order to do that, we need to be sure we have the right perspective. Is the glass half empty or half full? Overall, is life good…or not? We have the ability to choose our outlook. I trust you'll choose the one that leads to improvement...f in nothing else, in your perspective.
By the way, the economy IS showing some signs of improvement...
